Nov. 4 - Can you fathom it?

The mysteries of God are so far beyond our comprehension.

"He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed, miracles that cannot be counted." (Job 5:9)

"Can you fathom the mysteries of God? Can you probe the limits of the Almighty?" (Job 11:7)

"He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end." (Ecc. 3:11)

"Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom." (Isaiah 40:28)

"For who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ." (1 Corinthians 2:16)

I think we are all guilty of trying to place God in a box. We want to limit what we know of Him to our experiences and knowledge. We can't imagine that He might make decisions that we know nothing about or could begin to understand. Maybe he doesn't care about the same things that we put so much passion into creating. Perhaps He doesn't actually find that the politics and laws that mankind has created affect His relationship with people. I wonder if He sees the separations that each of us place out there based on belief systems, dogmas, biases, etc.

We can no more understand Him than an ant traveling to its anthill understands us. There is an enormous divide. Fortunately, the mystery of the relationship He wants to have with us is discovered in the Bible ... and in His Son. We have the mind of Christ. God has opened Himself to us, it's just up to us to decide if we really want to pay attention to Him or insist that He pay attention to us.
