November 21 - The Finger of God

I just love discovering things in scripture that I didn't put together previously. There are many references to the Finger of God. Who knew? I knew about the episode in Daniel (and we'll get to that), but there are others.

In Exodus 8, God is releasing the plagues on Egypt to convince Pharaoh that it is time to release the Israelites. The magicians are able to keep up for awhile and match the plagues, but by the time it comes to the gnats, they just couldn't do it. Their response to Pharaoh in Exodus 8:19 is "This is the finger of God." But, Pharaoh wouldn't listen.

In Exodus 31:18, the Lord was with Moses on Mt. Sinai giving him the tablets of the Testimony. "When the Lord finished speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai, he gave him the two tablets of the Testimony, the tablets of stone inscribed ... by the finger of God." Isn't that amazing? Imagine the power behind those words. God inscribed them Himself.

David says in Psalm 8:3, "When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place ..."

The work of God's fingers. We see His handiwork day after day. It was God's fingers that put each star into place. He didn't consider it tedious or taxing. He placed each star where it belonged with tender, loving care, never worrying about how long it might take or if anyone else would ever see it.

In Daniel 5 we find King Belshazzar, the son of Nebuchadnezzar, drinking from the blessed goblets that had been taken from the temple in Jerusalem. All of a sudden, fingers appeared and wrote on the wall. "Mene, Mene, Tekel, Parsin."

Daniel interpreted the words in Daniel 5:26-28. "Your days are numbered by God and have come to an end (this was said twice for effect), You have been weighed on the scales and found wanting. Your kingdom will be divided and given to the Medes and Persians."

That night, it all came true.

Jesus speaks of the finger of God in Luke 11 when He speaks to the crowd about Beelzebub. You can find it in Luke 11:20.

Our fingers do the work of creation. When I knit or paint, type (write), when my mother created sculptures or when I play the piano ... fingers are involved in doing the actual work. God's fingers reveal another portion of His creativity!
