September 17 - Ignorance of the Bible is Perilous

I guess I'm going to come back to it. How many of you are afraid to get into deep religious discussion because you don't feel as if you know the Bible well enough? Is your hand up? Put it down. That's just embarrassing! :)

Matthew 22:29, "Jesus replied, 'you are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God.'"

If you have spent any time reading my blogs over the last year, you are learning Scripture, you are getting this stuff into your head and into your heart. Every single time that you read scripture, whether it is in something like this blog, a daily verse with a meditation that comes into your email, a fully developed Bible study, a sermon on Sunday morning, you are incorporating the Word of God into your life! You are constantly learning.

Of course, you can always do more. But, even the greatest Bible scholar feels as if they don't know enough and could learn more. That is the amazing thing about scripture. No matter how long you study it or how much you know about it, you are only skimming the surface.

You can't afford to be ignorant, though!

John 20:9, "They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead."

or

Acts 13:27, "The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus, yet in condemning him they fulfilled the words of the prophets that are read every Sabbath."

What will you miss if you don't pay attention? I have a friend that expects me to grab her when the rapture comes, she doesn't want to miss it. But, my confidence lies in the fact that while she will never acknowledge a strong understanding of scripture, she is also always searching and trying to pay attention to what it is saying to her.

The most powerful statement comes from Paul in 2 Corinthians 3:15, "Even to this day when Moses is read, a veil covers their hearts."

It is a desire to be aware, a desire to know, a desire to be fully in the presence of God through His Word. Don't let the veil cover your heart. Open yourself to the Word of God and its truth.
